Es un proyecto de oficinas para una empresa que provee de capital humano y logístico a plataformas petroleras en Ciudad del Carmen Campeche, México. Durante nuestra investigación, descubrimos la enorme fuerza cultural, histórica y arquitectónica de Campeche. Sitios arqueológicos muy importantes para la civilización maya hacen de este lugar un emplazamiento muy importante: Calakmul; la iglesia de Guadalupe, donde fue bautizado el nieto de Hernán Cortés; la explotación de Palo de Tinte por parte de piratas ingleses para la monarquía española; el descubrimiento de un enorme banco de camarones; varios yacimientos de petróleo; la influencia de la arquitectura francesa en la isla; la lengua maya; entre otros muchos elementos.

Parecía necesario que este proyecto comunicara a través de la arquitectura rasgos de la cultura primigenia. El primero y más importante de ellos fue el óculo u observatorio solar: una extracción circular de nuestra losa que funciona como transepto en la planta cruciforme de nuestro proyecto. No sólo organizaba y daba dirección a todas las circulaciones, sino que también nos permitía tener una visión del cielo y las estrellas como hacían los antiguos mayas en sus observatorios. Esto se vio reforzado por el reflejo del propio cielo sobre una delgada lámina de agua, forzando así un encuentro con el antiguo dios.

La segunda evocación fueron las explanadas escalonadas que remiten a la ciudad sagrada maya de Calakmul. Una sección transversal denota de forma más evidente la vocación piramidal del proyecto y cómo se articulan las diferentes plataformas de éste a través de estas largas escalinatas.

El último rasgo, y quizás el más obvio, es una clara referencia a la civilización maya: un elemento en forma de pirámide truncada que recibe el tránsito peatonal y vehicular, y controla el acceso. El proyecto cruciforme se organiza a partir de un largo eje de circulación, interrumpido por el espejo de agua. A partir de ahí, el programa se organiza en dos áreas principales: la ejecutiva en el brazo izquierdo de la cruz y la operativa en el derecho. Esto se debe a una solicitud expresa de los clientes de mantener ambas áreas bien diferenciadas. Las áreas públicas del proyecto se sitúan al fondo del terreno: una plaza arbolada, un salón de clase o de conferencias, comedores, baños, y un área de atención psicológica.

La funcionalidad del proyecto se inspira en la forma en que Alberto Campo Baeza resolvió un encargo del Consejo Consultivo de Castilla y León, España. Alberto, al igual que nosotros, se encontró con un polígono bastante irregular y difícil; para organizarlo, encajó un elemento platónico en el extremo más conveniente del terreno y con dicho gesto lo convirtió en un elemento organizador en torno al cual danzarían los patios periféricos que circundan la nueva construcción y que la dotan de una atmósfera controlada e inspiradora.

It is a corporate office project for a company that provides human and logistical capital to oil platforms in Ciudad del Carmen, Mexico. During our research, we discovered the enormous cultural, historical, and architectural strength of Campeche. Very important archaeological sites for the Mayan civilization make this place a very important location: Calakmul; the church of Guadalupe, where Hernan Cortez’s grandson was baptized; the exploitation of Palo de Tinte by British pirates for the Spanish monarchy; the discovery of a huge shrimp bank; several oil deposits; the influence of French architecture on the island; the Mayan language; among many other elements.

It seemed necessary for this project to convey through architecture the features of a native culture. The first and most important of them was the oculus, or solar observatory: a circular extraction of our slab that functions as a transept in our project’s cruciform plan. It not only organized and gave direction to all circulations, but also allowed us to have a view of the sky and the stars as the ancient Mayans did in their observatories. This was reinforced by the reflection of the sky itself on a thin layer of water, thus forcing an encounter with the ancient god.

The second evocation were the staggered esplanades that referred to the sacred Mayan city of Calakmul. A cross section denotes more blatantly the pyramidal vocation of the project and how the different platforms of the project are articulated through such long staircases.

The last and perhaps most obvious is a clear reference to the Mayan civilization: a truncated pyramid-shaped element that receives pedestrian and vehicular traffic and controls access. The cruciform project is organized from a long circulation axis, interrupted by the water mirror. From there, the program splits into two main areas: the executive area in the left arm of the cross and the operative area in the right one. This was due to an unexpected request from the client to keep both areas well differentiated. The public areas are placed at the far end of the site: a tree-lined plaza, a classroom or conference room, dining rooms, restrooms, and a psychological care area.

The function of the project is inspired by the way Alberto Campo Baeza solved an assignment given by the Advisory Council of Castilla y Leon, Spain. Alberto, like us, encountered a rather irregular and difficult polygon; to organize it, he fit a platonic element at the most convenient end of the terrain and turned it into an organizing element around which peripheral patios dance, surrounding the new construction and providing it with a controlled and inspiring atmosphere.
